Cupping Therapy is an ancient medical treatment dating back thousands of years. The ancient Chinese, Koreans, Egyptians, and Arabs used cupping as a form of traditional therapy. It is believed that this practice in Europe dates back to the Bronze Age, and until the development of modern surgery, cupping therapy was a routine practice by doctors in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and the United States. In the Far East (China and Korea), cupping therapy has continued to be applied by both western medical doctors and traditional practitioners. In Turkey, this therapy is referred to as 'cupping therapy' or 'hijama'.

According to the British Cupping Association (2008), cupping therapy is an ancient medical technique that involves creating a local skin vacuum to collect blood, followed by a second vacuum to draw a small amount of blood from superficial skin incisions. There is no correlation between the amount of blood drawn and clinical benefit.

When is Cupping Therapy (Hijama) Performed?

In Islamic tradition, cupping therapy is considered a practice of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). It is recommended for overall well-being and for treating certain specific conditions. There is no special day or time for these conditions! It is applied when necessary.

For general well-being, it is appropriate to perform it on the 'three odd days' in the second half of the lunar month. This means performing it on odd days in the second half of the month (15th, 17th, 19th, 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th days) is also suitable.

Before cupping therapy, fasting or diet is not necessary, nor is discontinuing medications except for blood thinners.
