Egg Retrieval Procedure (Oocyte Pick Up= OPU)

Following the enlargement of the follicles in the ovaries to the desired size, a trigger shot is administered. Egg retrieval procedure is planned about 34-36 hours after this process. The egg retrieval procedure is performed under sedation, accompanied by vaginal ultrasonography. The woman is placed in the gynecological examination position. After vaginal cleansing, the needle is guided through the ultrasound probe to reach the ovaries. Each follicle is entered, and the follicular fluid is aspirated using a special aspirator. The collected follicular fluid is examined microscopically in the IVF laboratory. The egg retrieval procedure takes 5-10 minutes. Subsequently, the patient is taken to the recovery room.

The patient is started on preparations containing progesterone on the day following the egg retrieval procedure. The aim is to prepare the uterine lining for the embryo implantation. Progesterone supplementation should continue until the pregnancy test.

Sperm Collection

On the day of egg retrieval, men are asked to provide a sperm sample through masturbation under clinical conditions after 1-2 days of sexual abstinence. In cases where no sperm is found in the semen, sperm retrieval from the testes may be necessary through aspiration or biopsy. This procedure is carried out with a specialized urology physician either before or on the day of the egg retrieval.

What to pay attention to after the egg retrieval procedure?

It is recommended that the patient rests for a day and avoids engaging in strenuous activities due to receiving anesthesia. It is advisable not to drive for a day and refrain from resuming daily activities unless absolutely necessary.

Smoking and alcohol should be avoided during this period.

Paracetamol and similar pain relievers can be used.
